Learn About Our Equestrian Facility in Hawaii

Koko Crater Stables has been operating in the Koko Head Regional Park since it opened in the early 1960’s. It is managed by Horse Haven Training, under the direction of Michelle Mizutani and assisted by Haven Mizutani. Our lesson program in among the best in the state for competitive Hunter/Jumpers. We teach beginner riders through advanced, whether you wish to compete or not.

Our History

In May 2016, after nearly 60 years in business, Koko Crater Stables was shuttered, locked, and mostly forgotten. It was closed by the City and County of Honolulu, its landowner. With no one willing to take the troubled and now-derelict facility on, its destiny was to be demolished and folded into the nearby Koko Crater Botanical Garden.

A small group of families lobbied the city for the opportunity to make the stables safe for horses and riders again. The local government said it was impossible, as the stables were too far gone.

Community members armed with various tools such as chain saws, hammers, nails and paint buckets, it was soon clear that the entire Hawaii equine community supported the endeavor. Koko Crater Stables represents the very best of what people can accomplish if they work together. In November 2016, our facility was back on its feet. There remains a lot of work to be done, but we are up and riding.

Today, Koko Crater Stables continues its legacy as a local horseback riding center as we continue to rebuild this cherished facility. Our trainers specialize in competitive Hunter/Jumper athletes and youth education. Additionally, our facility has been reopened as a venue for public horse shows. These events are open to all equestrians and free to the public. Join us as we strive for another 60 years of horses inside the crater!
